I love living in Asheville and believe in giving back to our community. That’s why I recently volunteered with Asheville Habitat for Humanity’s New Heights project. This project is designed to provide affordable housing to low-income families in the area, and I was thrilled to be a part of it. Here’s a closer look at the project and my experience volunteering.
What is Asheville Habitat for Humanity’s New Heights Project?
Asheville Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing affordable housing to families in need. The New Heights project is part of their efforts to build new homes that are energy-efficient and affordable for low-income families. The project aims to build six new homes, each with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, in the West Asheville area.
The Importance of Affordable Housing in Asheville
Affordable housing is a critical issue in Asheville, as it is in many other cities across the United States. The cost of living in Asheville has been steadily rising in recent years, and this has made it increasingly difficult for low-income families to find affordable housing. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, a household in Asheville would need to earn $22.82 per hour to afford a two-bedroom apartment at fair market rent. However, the average hourly wage in Asheville is just $16.15, making it difficult for many families to make ends meet.
Affordable housing is important not just for the families who need it, but also for the community as a whole. When families have access to safe, affordable housing, they are better able to thrive and contribute to their community. Affordable housing also helps to reduce homelessness and housing insecurity, which can have far-reaching social and economic impacts.
My Experience Volunteering on the New Heights Project
A team of volunteers, including myself and other realtors, spent a day working on the New Heights project, and it was an incredibly rewarding experience. We worked alongside other volunteers and Habitat for Humanity staff members to help build the foundation of one of the new homes.
Before we began working, we received a safety orientation and were provided with all of the tools and equipment we needed to complete our tasks. We spent the day hammering, sawing, and installing siding on several houses.
It was hard work, but we all felt a sense of pride and accomplishment at the end of the day. Knowing that we were helping to build a home for a family in need was a truly humbling experience.
